How to create a coupon code

Create a coupon code in Settings > Coupons: set the code, the products and minimums it needs, what it discounts, when it runs and who can use it.

You create coupon codes in Settings > Coupons. This article goes through every field on the coupon form, in the order it appears. Most fields are optional: a simple coupon only needs a name, a code and a discount.

Before you start

  • Decide what the coupon gives (a product discount, a free product, a shipping discount or a mix) and who it's for.

  • Decide when the coupon should stop. We recommend an end date or a redemption limit on every coupon, so it switches itself off.

  • If the coupon is for a customer group, such as trade customers, create the customer group first. See How to create a customer group

Steps

  1. Go to Settings > Coupons and click + Add Coupon.

  2. In Name, type a name your team will recognise, for example Spring 10%. Customers don't see the name. It can be up to 50 characters.

  3. In Code, type the code customers will enter, for example SPRING10. Codes aren't case-sensitive, so spring10 also works.

  4. In Description, add a note for your team if you like.

  5. In Minimum Order Bottle Quantity, enter the number of bottles the order must have, or leave it at 0. See How to set a minimum quantity or minimum spend on a coupon

  6. To make the coupon need certain products, click Edit product preference next to Required Products in Order, choose the products and click Set Products. Then set Minimum Required Product Quantity. See How to make a coupon that only works with certain products

  7. In Applies To Products, leave Same as Required Products, or choose Different Selection to discount other products, such as a free bottle.

  8. In Minimum Order Total, enter the amount the products must add up to (not counting shipping), or leave it at 0.

  9. Set the Discount type: None, Percentage, Fixed discount or Fixed price, and fill in the amounts. See What are the coupon discount types?

  10. Set Applies to Already Discounted Prices. Leave it on No unless you want the coupon to come off club prices and other discounted prices too. See What does Applies to Already Discounted Prices do on a coupon?

  11. Set the Shipping discount type if the coupon includes a shipping discount: Free shipping, Flat rate or Discounted shipping. See How to give free or cheaper shipping with a coupon

  12. Set Active?. We recommend Active until (with an end date) or Active between (with start and end dates). See How to make a coupon stop automatically

  13. Set the Redemption count: No Limit, Total (uses across all customers) or Per person.

  14. Leave Auto apply on No unless the coupon should apply without a code. See How do auto apply and combining coupons work?

  15. Leave Allow combining with other coupons on No unless customers should be able to use this coupon with other coupons.

  16. Set the Channel. Any means the coupon works everywhere. See How to limit a coupon to certain customers or sales channels

  17. Under Customer Pricing Group, tick customer groups to limit the coupon to those customers. Leave them all unticked for everyone.

  18. Click Save.

What happens next

  • The coupon appears in the list in Settings > Coupons, with its discount and status.

  • Customers can use the code straight away (or from the start date you set).

  • If something on the form isn't valid, for example a name over 50 characters or a Minimum Required Product Quantity of 0, the coupon isn't saved and a message shows under the field.

Test your coupon before you announce it

Coupons with several rules can behave differently from what you expect. Before you send the code to customers, open a customer in Customers, click Create Order, add the products and enter the code in Enter Coupon (Optional). The Order Summary shows the discount. Try a cart just under each minimum too, to check the coupon is refused. Close the panel without placing the order.
