How to make a coupon stop automatically

Give every coupon an end date, a redemption limit or both so it switches itself off, instead of working forever until someone remembers to turn it off.

A coupon with no end date and no usage limit keeps working until someone turns it off. Old codes get shared on coupon websites, and auto apply coupons keep discounting orders long after a promotion ends. We recommend every coupon has an end date, a redemption limit, or both, so it stops by itself.

Option 1: an end date

Use Active? on the coupon:

  • Active until: the coupon works until the end date, then stops.

  • Active between: the coupon starts on the start date and stops on the end date. Good for a weekend sale.

  • Active from: the coupon starts on a date and has no end. Use this only with a redemption limit.

Option 2: a redemption limit

Use Redemption count:

  • Total: the coupon can be used this many times across all customers, for example the first 50 orders.

  • Per person: each customer can use the coupon this many times, for example once each.

Steps

  1. Go to Settings > Coupons and open the coupon, or click + Add Coupon.

  2. Set Active? to Active until or Active between, and choose the dates.

  3. Set Redemption count to Total or Per person and enter the number, if you want a limit.

  4. Click Save.

What happens next

  • Before the start date, customers see "This coupon is currently unavailable."

  • After the end date, customers see "This coupon has already expired."

  • Once the limit is reached, customers see "Coupon has reached its usage limit and is no longer available." With Per person, other customers can still use it.

  • An order uses up a redemption when it's placed, including a back office order on Pay on Invoice that hasn't been paid yet.

Turn a coupon off now

To stop a coupon straight away, open it, set Active? to No and click Save. Customers who try it see "Sorry, this coupon is no longer valid." Setting it to No keeps the coupon so you can turn it back on later.

Troubleshooting

  • A customer says the code has expired: check the dates in Active?. You can move the end date and save to extend it.

  • The usage limit was reached sooner than expected: unpaid invoice orders count as uses too.
