How do auto apply and combining coupons work?

Auto apply puts a coupon on every order that meets its conditions without a code. Allow combining with other coupons lets it be used with other coupons on the same order.

Two coupon settings control how coupons apply without staff or customers thinking about them:

  • Auto apply: the coupon applies by itself to every order that meets its conditions. Nobody has to enter the code.

  • Allow combining with other coupons: the coupon can be used on the same order as other coupons.

Both default to No. They're useful, but they're also the settings most likely to give away more discount than you meant, so set them carefully.

Auto apply

  • An auto apply coupon applies as soon as the order meets its conditions, for example free shipping as soon as the cart has 12 bottles.

  • It applies on every channel the coupon allows. Check the Channel and Customer Pricing Group settings so it only reaches the orders you mean.

  • If the customer enters a different coupon that can't be combined, WithWine keeps whichever coupon saves the customer more.

  • Always give an auto apply coupon an end date (Active until). Otherwise it keeps running until someone remembers to turn it off. See How to make a coupon stop automatically

Allow combining with other coupons

  • If every coupon on the order is set to Yes, they all apply. For example, a 10% Shiraz coupon and a free shipping coupon both apply.

  • If any coupon on the order is set to No, only one coupon is used: the one that saves the customer the most. The other is removed without a message. Example: a 10% coupon worth $4.50 and a free shipping coupon worth $20, both set to No: the customer gets the free shipping only.

  • Even when coupons combine, each product only gets one coupon. WithWine picks the coupon that gives that product the lowest price.

Steps

  1. Go to Settings > Coupons and open the coupon.

  2. Set Auto apply to Yes or No.

  3. Set Allow combining with other coupons to Yes or No.

  4. If you turned either on, set Active? to Active until and choose an end date.

  5. Click Save.

What happens next

  • An auto apply coupon shows on qualifying orders straight away. The Auto Apply column in Settings > Coupons shows which coupons are set to auto apply.

  • Staff placing back office orders may see the auto apply coupon already in the cart.

Troubleshooting

  • Customers are getting a discount without a code: a coupon is set to Auto apply. Check the Auto Apply column in Settings > Coupons.

  • A customer entered two codes but only one worked: at least one of the coupons isn't set to combine, so WithWine kept the one that saved more.

  • The discount is bigger than expected: see Why did a customer get a bigger discount than expected?
