What is a coupon code?

A coupon code gives customers a discount, a free product, cheaper shipping or a mix, and can be limited by products, quantity, spend, dates, channel and customer.

A coupon code gives customers a discount on their order, a free or cheaper product, cheaper shipping, or a mix of these. You create coupon codes in Settings > Coupons.

WithWine coupons are flexible: one coupon can combine several rules. For example, "buy any 12 bottles including 6 Shiraz, get 15% off the Shiraz and free shipping, until the end of the month" is a single coupon.

How WithWine decides the price

WithWine always gives the customer the cheapest price they're entitled to, product by product. A coupon competes with the customer's other prices, such as the club discount, a 6-bottle price or a customer group price. If the coupon doesn't give a cheaper price, the customer keeps the price they already had and the coupon shows no discount.

The exception is Applies to Already Discounted Prices set to Yes: then the coupon comes off the already discounted price, so the customer gets both discounts.

Where customers use coupon codes

Customers enter coupon codes at checkout on your website and in the WithWine app. Staff can enter a coupon code on a back office order, in the Enter Coupon (Optional) box of the Create Order panel.

Be careful with

Coupons can be fully automated, which also means a mistake can give away more than you meant. Most unexpected discounts come from:

  • Applies to Already Discounted Prices set to Yes, so club members get their club discount plus the coupon.

  • Auto apply set to Yes on a coupon that should only be used with a code.

  • Allow combining with other coupons set to Yes, so customers stack several coupons.

  • No end date and no redemption limit, so an old promotion keeps running.

We recommend giving every coupon an end date (Active until) or a redemption limit. See Why did a customer get a bigger discount than expected?
