How customers use their credit

How customers see and spend their account credit at checkout on your website, and how this differs from gift cards.

Customers spend their account credit at checkout on your website. WithWine applies their credit automatically, and the customer can choose to use less or none of it.

In this article, account credit means credit in a customer's account: loyalty credit, manual credit, and gift cards that have been redeemed to the customer's account. To redeem a gift card means to move its value into a customer's account. To spend a gift card or credit means to use it to pay for an order.

Where customers see their credit

  • On their email receipt.

  • At checkout on your website, which shows any credit the customer can use on that order.

  • In the WithWine app, which gives customers the best view of their credit.

How credit is applied at checkout

  1. The customer goes to checkout on your website.

  2. WithWine applies the customer's available credit automatically.

  3. If the customer wants to keep their credit for later, they can switch the credit toggle off, or change how much credit to use.

What credit can be spent on

Credit can only be spent on the parts of an order its credit class allows. For example, shipping dollars can only be spent on the shipping part of an order. Any credit left over stays in the customer's account until it's spent or it expires. See What is a credit class?.

Where account credit can be spent

Customers can spend account credit on your website only. Customers can't spend account credit at your cellar door through point of sale (POS).

This includes gift cards that have been redeemed to a customer's account. Once a customer redeems a gift card to their account, the gift card's value is account credit, so it can only be spent on your website.

Gift cards at the cellar door

Customers can spend a gift card at your cellar door, as long as they haven't redeemed it to their account. Your staff scan the gift card in point of sale (POS), and WithWine uses the gift card's value to pay for the order.

On the order, the payment type shows as credit balance, not gift card. This is because WithWine turns the gift card into credit and spends it straight away. The gift card's details are included in the CSV export on the Orders screen.

Transaction fees on credit

WithWine's transaction fee applies to the whole order, including the part paid with credit. For example, if a customer places a $200 order and pays $100 with credit and $100 by card, the transaction fee is charged on $200. The Settings > Loyalty & Credit page notes this as "Credit usage incurs payment processing fees".

Troubleshooting

A customer wants to use their credit at the cellar door. Account credit can only be spent on your website. If the customer has a gift card they haven't redeemed to their account, your staff can scan the gift card in POS instead.
