How to find out which company manages your domain's DNS

Look up your domain's nameservers to find where to add the DKIM records from WithWine: GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Namecheap, Squarespace, VentraIP, Crazy Domains or another provider.

To set up DKIM for WithWine emails, you add records to your domain's DNS settings. DNS settings are managed by one company, which isn't always the company you bought the domain from, or the company that hosts your website or email. This article shows you how to find out which company manages your DNS, so you know where to add the records.

Why it matters which company manages your DNS

Your domain uses nameservers to tell the internet which company holds its DNS records. Records only work if you add them at the company your nameservers point to. If you add the records somewhere else, for example at the company you bought the domain from when your DNS is actually at Cloudflare, the records save but never work, and WithWine's Configure DKIM page never shows Success.

How to find your nameservers

  1. Open a WHOIS lookup tool, such as lookup.icann.org. For .au domains, you can also use the auDA WHOIS lookup at whois.auda.org.au.

  2. Enter your domain, for example [yourdomain].

  3. Look for Name Servers (sometimes shown as Nameservers or NS) in the results.

What your nameservers mean

The nameservers usually include the name of the company that manages your DNS:

If the nameservers name another company (for example your website host, Wix, Shopify or Microsoft), log in to that company's account and look for DNS, DNS records, DNS management or Zone Editor. The steps in How to set up DKIM for your email domain work with any DNS provider.

If you can't log in or don't know who set up your domain

  • Search your email inbox for invoices or renewal notices from the company in your nameservers.

  • Ask whoever built your website or manages your IT. That person often manages the DNS too.

  • Send the person the records from your Configure DKIM page and this article, and ask them to add the records.

Troubleshooting

The WHOIS lookup doesn't show nameservers. Try another WHOIS tool, check the domain is spelt correctly, and check the domain hasn't expired.

I added the records but WithWine never shows Success. Check the records were added at the company your nameservers point to, not at another company.
