Why are my WithWine emails going to spam or showing as Unverified?

Checks to work through when customers find WithWine emails in spam or junk, or Outlook shows "Unverified" next to your winery's name.

If customers say WithWine emails (receipts, invoices, club emails or newsletters) are going to spam or junk, or Outlook shows "Unverified" next to your winery's name, the most common cause is a From Email Address on your own domain without DKIM set up. Work through the checks below in order.

Check 1: Was the email sent?

  1. Go to Emails in the left menu.

  2. Find the email using the Show emails for filter (for example Order Receipt or Customer Newsletter).

  3. Check the email's status and the number of recipients.

If the email isn't in the list, the email wasn't sent, so the problem isn't spam. For newsletters sent from the Customers screen, unsubscribed customers aren't sent the email.

Check 2: Which address are your emails sent from?

Go to Settings > My Brand > Brand Details and look at From Email Address:

  • Blank: your emails come from "WithWine" <contact@withwine.com>, which already passes SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Spam filtering is then most likely caused by the email's content or the customer's own settings. Go to Check 5.

  • A free address (Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Outlook.com or iCloud): emails from a free address sent through WithWine can't be verified and are likely to go to spam. Change the From Email Address to an address on your own domain, or clear the field.

  • An address on your own domain: go to Check 3.

Check 3: Is the From Email Address verified?

Under From Email Address, check Amazon Web Services Verified and WithWine Verified both show in green. If either is missing, WithWine still sends from contact@withwine.com. See How to send WithWine emails from your own email address.

Check 4: Is DKIM set up?

  1. Under From Email Address, click Configure DKIM.

  2. Click Refresh.

  3. Check the status next to DKIM Configuration and Mail From Configuration.

If the status isn't Success, the DNS records haven't been added or haven't been found yet. Emails from your own address without DKIM are much more likely to go to spam, and Outlook shows "Unverified". If your domain has a DMARC policy of quarantine or reject, emails without DKIM can be sent to spam or rejected outright. See How to set up DKIM for your email domain.

Check 5: Is it the customer's inbox?

  • Gmail often puts newsletters in the Promotions tab, which isn't spam. Ask the customer to check Promotions, and to drag your email to Primary.

  • Ask the customer to add your From Email Address to their contacts or safe senders list.

  • Check the customer's email address is spelt correctly on their customer record.

  • Company email systems can hold emails in quarantine. The customer's IT team can release the email.

Check 6: Is it the email content?

  • Avoid subject lines in all capitals or with lots of exclamation marks.

  • Don't send an email that is only one large image. Include text as well.

  • Send to customers who have chosen to receive your emails. Lots of spam complaints harm delivery for every email you send.
