How loyalty program tiers work

How loyalty program tiers decide when customers start earning credit, and how much credit they earn.

Loyalty program tiers decide when a customer starts earning loyalty credit and how much credit they earn. Each tier says: once a customer has spent a set amount within a set number of months, they get a percentage of their orders back as credit.

How a tier works

A tier has three settings: Spend Required ($), Within (months) and % Back as Credit. For example, a tier of $500 within 12 months at 5% means: once a customer has spent $500 with you in the last 12 months, they get 5% of each order back as credit.

The time period rolls

The Within (months) period is a rolling period, not a calendar year. Every time a customer places an order, WithWine looks back over the set number of months from that day. For a 12-month tier, WithWine adds up the customer's spending from 12 months ago until today, including the new order.

Because the period rolls, older orders drop out over time. A customer stays in a tier only while their spending within the period is at or above the Spend Required ($) amount.

Credit starts on the order that reaches the tier

The customer earns credit on the order that takes them over the tier's spend, and on every order after that while they stay in the tier. The customer doesn't earn credit on the orders before they reached the tier.

Example, with a tier of $500 at 5%:

  • A customer has spent $499 in the last 12 months. They haven't earned any credit yet.

  • They place a $100 order. Their spending is now $599, so they've reached the tier. They earn 5% of $100, which is $5 of credit.

Customers get the highest tier they reach

If you have more than one tier, the customer gets the percentage of the highest tier they've reached.

Example, with tiers of $500 at 5% and $1,000 at 10%: a new customer places a $1,200 order. That order takes them past $1,000, so they earn 10% of $1,200, which is $120 of credit.

Only eligible purchases count

Only the parts of an order ticked under Credit can be earned on count toward a tier, and credit is only calculated on those parts.

Example: Wine is ticked and Other products is unticked. A customer orders $100 of wine and $100 of merchandise. Only the $100 of wine counts toward the tier's spend, and the customer's credit is a percentage of the $100 of wine.

Tiers for certain customer groups

Each tier can be limited to one customer group with Customer Group, or can leave out a customer group with (Excluded) Customer Group. For example, you could give a higher percentage to a VIP customer group.
