How to set up shipping rates

Set the shipping price customers pay for each shipping zone and type of order, and put your rates in the right order.

A shipping rate is the price a customer pays for delivery. Each rate applies to one or more shipping zones and, if you choose, an order contents rule. WithWine checks your rates from the top of the list down and uses the first rate that matches the order.

Before you start

  • Create your shipping zones first.

  • If a rate depends on what is in the order (for example free shipping on $200 or more), create the order contents rule first.

Add a shipping rate

  1. Go to Settings > My Brand > Shipping.

  2. Next to Rates, click Edit.

  3. Click Add Rate.

  4. Tick one or more shipping zones. If you tick more than one, the rate applies to any of them (for example Middle States or Western Australia or Tasmania).

  5. If the rate only applies to some orders, tick an order contents rule. If you don't tick one, the rate applies to any order and shows as Any.

  6. Under Rate ($), enter a price for Bottle and Other (both required) and check Gift Card (0 by default). For each, choose Per order, Per box or Per weight unit.

  7. Click Done.

  8. Repeat for each rate you need.

  9. Use the up and down arrows to put your rates in order.

  10. Click Save.

Important: clicking Done or the arrows doesn't save anything. Your rates are only kept when you click Save. If you leave or refresh the page first, your changes are lost.

Put your rates in the right order

Using the up / down arrows beside each rate you've created, put the most specific rate at the top and the most general rate at the bottom. For example:

  1. Australia, $200 or more: $0 (free shipping)

  2. Sydney Metro: $5 per order

  3. East Coast: $10 per order

  4. Middle States, Western Australia or Tasmania: $20 per order

  5. Australia: $20 per order (backup)

A US brand would do the same with its own shipping zones, for example a local ZIP code zone first, then West Coast, then the rest of the United States as the backup.

Sydney Metro is inside East Coast. Because Sydney Metro is above East Coast, Sydney customers pay $5. If East Coast were higher, they would pay $10.

Tips

  • Set Other to $0 in most cases. Non-wine items such as t-shirts and key rings are usually bought with wine and go in the same box.

  • Keep a backup rate at the bottom. Leave a rate for the whole country at a sensible price, such as $10 to $20, in case an address doesn't match any of your other shipping zones.

  • Check the default rate. New brands start with a free rate for their country. If it stays at the top, every order gets free shipping. Move it to the bottom and give it a backup price, or delete it.

Stop shipping certain orders

Tick Do not ship on a rate to stop orders that match it, for example orders to a zone you don't deliver to, or orders below a minimum number of bottles. You can show customers a message explaining why.

What happens next

New and edited rates apply to new orders as soon as you click Save.

Troubleshooting

Customers are charged the wrong shipping. A more general rate is above a more specific one. Move the specific rate up.

My new rate is never used. The default free country-wide rate, or another general rate, is above it. Move your new rate up or the general rate down.

My rates disappeared. They weren't saved. Add them again and click Save before leaving the page.
