Each stock location has an out of stock setting for website orders (eCommerce Out of Stock Behaviour) and for POS (POS Out of Stock Behaviour). It decides what happens when WithWine's stock count for a product reaches zero.
Back order: orders still go through, even if WithWine thinks the product is out of stock.
Dont sell: WithWine stops selling the product when its stock reaches zero.
These settings only apply to products where WithWine is tracking stock.
New stock locations start on Dont sell. The Default Stock Location starts on Back order.
Why the Default Stock Location starts on Back order
When you first set up WithWine, you usually add your products before you enter any stock. If the Default Stock Location started on Dont sell, those products would show as out of stock and you couldn't sell them. Starting on Back order means you can start selling straight away, without any barriers.
Once you've entered your stock levels, you can change the setting to Dont sell if you never want to sell more than you have.
Change the out of stock setting
Go to Settings > Stock Locations.
Click the name of the stock location.
In eCommerce Out of Stock Behaviour, choose Dont sell or Back order.
In POS Out of Stock Behaviour, choose Dont sell or Back order.
Click Save.
Show a message or low stock count on your website
Out of Stock Message: a message shown on your website when a product is out of stock or on back order.
Display Quantity Left At: when stock drops to this number, your website shows customers how many are left. For example, enter 5 to show the count when 5 or fewer are left.
Click Save after changing either setting.
Troubleshooting
Customers can buy products that are out of stock. The stock location is set to Back order. Change it to Dont sell.
A product won't sell but we have stock. The stock location is set to Dont sell and WithWine's stock count is zero. Update the stock count, or change the setting to Back order.
