Why am I getting a 403 Forbidden error?

A blank white page saying 403 Forbidden means WithWine's firewall blocked what you sent, usually an image with hidden data or pasted HTML. Export the image as a new file, or paste the text without its formatting.

A 403 Forbidden error is a blank white page with the words 403 Forbidden. The error means WithWine's firewall blocked what you were sending. The firewall protects WithWine from harmful code. Sometimes the firewall blocks something safe because it looks like code.

The two most common causes of a 403 Forbidden error are:

  • Uploading an image, for example a product image, a logo or an image in an email.

  • Pasting HTML or other code into the email builder or the HTML Editor.

Before you start

  • Click your browser's Back button to get back to the page you were on.

  • Anything you hadn't saved before the error may be lost, so check your work.

How to fix a 403 Forbidden error when you upload an image

Every image file holds hidden information (called metadata), such as the camera, the date and the app that edited the image. Sometimes this hidden information looks like code to the firewall. Saving the image as a new file removes most of the hidden information.

  1. Find the image on your computer.

  2. Export the image as a new file:

    • On a Mac: open the image in Preview, choose File > Export, choose JPEG or PNG, give the image a new name and click Save.

    • On Windows: open the image in Paint, choose File > Save as, choose JPEG picture or PNG picture, give the image a new name and click Save.

  3. Go back to WithWine and upload the new file.

How to fix a 403 Forbidden error when you paste text or code

Text copied from a website, a Word document or another email often carries hidden code. Pasting HTML that contains a script (code between <script> and </script>) into the email builder or the HTML Editor can also trigger the firewall.

  1. Paste the text without its formatting: press Ctrl + Shift + V on Windows. On a Mac, press Cmd + Shift + V in Chrome, or Option + Shift + Cmd + V in Safari.

  2. If the error happens again, paste the text into Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac) first, copy it again from there, then paste it into WithWine.

  3. If you're pasting HTML, remove any script code. Emails can't run scripts, so you don't lose anything by removing them.

Troubleshooting

  • The image still gives a 403 Forbidden error after exporting it. Some apps keep the hidden information when they save a new file. Take a screenshot of the image instead (Cmd + Shift + 4 on a Mac, or the Snipping Tool on Windows) and upload the screenshot. A screenshot is a brand-new file with no hidden information.

  • I still get the 403 Forbidden error. Message WithWine support in the chat. Tell WithWine support which page you were on and what you were uploading or pasting.
