What to try if Tap to Pay on iPhone isn't working

How to fix Tap to Pay on iPhone in Vintner when it won't start or a card won't read.

Most Tap to Pay on iPhone problems come from an older iPhone or iOS version, or the card being held in the wrong spot.

Checks to try, in order

  1. Check the iPhone model. Tap to Pay on iPhone with Vintner needs an iPhone that runs iOS 26 or later: an iPhone 11, iPhone SE (2nd generation) or newer. Tap to Pay on iPhone doesn't work on iPad.

  2. Update your iPad or iPhone. Vintner needs iOS 26 or later on iPhone, or iPadOS 26 or later on iPad. Open the Settings app, tap General > Software Update, and install any update. If your device can't update to version 26, it's too old to use with Vintner.

  3. Update the Vintner app. Open the App Store, tap your profile picture, and update Vintner if an update is listed.

  4. Don't use an iOS beta. Tap to Pay on iPhone doesn't work on beta versions of iOS.

  5. Check Vintner's location permission. Open the Settings app, scroll down and tap Vintner. Check that Location is set to While Using the App. Tap to Pay on iPhone won't start without location access.

  6. Check the internet connection. Open a website on the iPhone to check it's online.

  7. Hold the card in the right spot. Ask the customer to hold their card, phone or watch flat against the top of the back of the iPhone, near the camera, until the iPhone confirms. Remove thick or metal phone cases if cards won't read.

  8. Restart Vintner and the iPhone. Close Vintner completely, restart the iPhone, then open Vintner again.

If the card still won't read

Some cards aren't contactless. Ask the customer to use a digital wallet such as Apple Pay, or take the payment on a card reader. If Tap to Pay on iPhone won't start at all, see What to try if your card reader won't connect to Vintner or contact WithWine support.
